When it comes to smartphone displays there are various panels, gadgets and technologies on the market. Sometimes these are useful, but a lot of times their usefulness is questionable, such as with the 4K display of the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium. Its resolution is a huge 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, but in daily use it isn't activated often enough to reduce energy demand.
But now a report has surfaced on the tech site PhoneRadar and purports that Sony is working on an Xperia X Premium with Full-HD resolution. The report suggests that Sony wants to set a new record for display brightness. The 'White Magic LCD' would allow maximum brightness of 1,300 cd/m². By comparison, the display of Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge can reach a maximum value of 855 cd/m², according DisplayMate.
The bright display from Sony Xperia X Premium would therefore natively fit within High Dynamic Range (HDR). For photos and videos, this would provide better image reproduction thanks to an HDR display's high contrast and vibrant colors.
As nice as that sounds, once again, this could very well be useless display technology by our estimates. Just as the 4K display of the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium was, so too could the HDR display of the Xperia X Premium be effective only with certain applications, such as the photo gallery or video player. It's unlikely that this will provide great everyday usage at this stage.
